By fabricating fictional architectures and objects, or adjusting existing architectures, George considers how suburban and urban spaces reflect, orientate and hold bodies. Recent work explores how everyday objects and built environments can be subverted to communicate queer experiences and imagine more sustainable futures.
George has exhibited and produced installations around Australia and overseas, and has collaborated on projects with the Melbourne Fringe Festival, Platform Arts and the Abbotsford Convent. They were the curator of Intermission Project at Collingwood Yards in 2018, and are a curatorial advisor for Science Gallery Melbourne.
Tumbleweed
Tumbleweed is a temporary, sculptural installation that travels to multiple sites before undergoing a recycling process. The work disrupts the everyday and invites audiences to consider how familiar objects and activities can be reimagined in order to create a more sustainable future.
The installation consists of manipulated and joined white plastic chairs (‘Monobloc’ chairs), forming a large plastic tumbleweed structure.
Tumbleweed will be installed in a series of iterations across a number of vacant lots and parking lots, after which the materials will be remoulded into other plastic products as part of a program of workshops and talks. The project considers current relationships to plastic, and processes of consumption and waste, while exploring possibilities for circular systems within art production and beyond.
