Angela Louise Powell is an emerging Melbourne-based interdisciplinary practitioner.

Angela’s work investigates the semiotics of urban space. Her practice investigates the influence design and the orchestration of space has on the emotions and behaviours of individuals. Angela engages with narratives around desire, intimacy and loneliness exploring their relationship to liminal space.

Her work has been exhibited at the Victorian College of the Arts gallery spaces, Margaret Lawrence Gallery, George Paton Gallery, Bus Projects, Creative Spaces’ Dirty Dozen Project Space, as well as BLINDSIDE gallery for their Summer Studio Residency program for 2016/17.

Angela lived in Berlin, Germany in 2018-19 participating in two international residencies for her collaborative practice with fellow Australian artist Jessie Burrows, through residency programs with GlogauAir gGmbH and ZK/U (Zentrum für Kunst und Urbanistik).

Tertium Quid – an exercise in free will

Tertium Quid is a scalable multi-site project intending to explore a series of temporary sculptural interventions in open public spaces by creating an adult playground for social play. The Latin term Tertium Quid is defined as a third indefinite element in a relation to or combination to two known others. In psychology, it has been identified as free will; spontaneous or autonomous agency. Tertium Quid seeks to explore placemaking, and how the design of urban spaces gives people the desire and agency to play. It also explores the importance of play for adults, offering a moment of potential escape or freedom from the confines of city life and social structures of metropolitan spaces.

In a time of social distancing and isolation, Angela has considered making this work in recognition of the social and cultural importance of future play. COVID-19 has not only limited social interactions, it has also eroded recreational and social spaces for cultural events. Tertium Quid offers a space for adults to play and socialise that offers a space to recover from the impacts COVID-19 has had on our relationship with public spaces and social encounters.

The orchestration of space is designed to invite the public to reimagine different ways of engaging with public space and familiar public infrastructure. The curation of these structures creates an inclusive design by having a series of moments where the work faces towards one another.
