Edward Ekselman
Business: Edward Ekselman
In 1956, Edward Ekselman established his business in Little Collins Street, continuing a family history of watchmaking which included his mother and brother. Shortly after this, Edward moved to his current location in Collins Street, where he has remained for over 54 years repairing watches and jewellery and selling his wares to city workers. He likes being in the city because it means he is close to everything, including business contacts and customers.
Ray Gissara
Business: Jissara Hair
Ray Gissara started his career as a 14-year old apprentice in Italy. After qualifying as a hairdresser, he accompanied his sister on a visit to Australia. Ray fell in love with Kensington and instead of returning to Italy started working at Vic Willouby’s salon in Macaulay Road. He bought the 39-year-old business soon after. He continues to work at Jissara Hair, now sharing the business with his son, John. Ray declares that 56 years after he started his business, Melbourne still has his heart.
Robert D. Marshall
Business: Khumbila Pty Ltd
Robert Marshall established his private practice as a consultant surgeon at 5 Collins Street in 1956. While his practice has since moved a few doors down, he knows that Collins Street is the traditional site for his surgical practice and he will remain there as long as he can. The central city offers a convenient location for those using his services.
Dr Eric Taft AM
Business: Dr E. H. Taft
Melbourne-raised Dr Eric Taft is a physician specialising in dermatology. His private practice has been located in the Melbourne municipality since 1957 because it offers a convenient, central location for his patients from throughout Victoria. Since completing postgraduate studies in London and specialist training in the USA, Dr Taft has focused his career on contributing to Melbourne’s hospitals (including public hospitals) and people, and teaching medical students. Dr Taft’s contribution to the field of medicine, and especially dermatology, was recognised in 1980 when he became a Member of the Order of Australia.
