Fawkner Park is one of Melbourne’s most popular parks, with over 9000 people enjoying the space every day.

City of Melbourne made several improvements to Fawkner Park from 2021 to 2023 to ensure the park's ongoing health and sustainability.

                    Southern sports field renewal

From October 2022 to May 2023, we upgraded the southern sports field. This was part of our commitment to renewing and maintaining our open spaces outlined in our Asset Management Strategy.

                    The upgrade included:

                    • new drainage and irrigation
                    • new turf and synthetic cricket wickets
                    • new turf on the remaining sections of the field.

The turf wicket will remain fenced off until late 2023.

Sports clubs will use oval 19 for the 2023 winter sport season. We've installed temporary sports lights around oval 19 and each unit will be powered by a small generator which may produce some noise. The lights will be in operation from early April 2023, and will be turned off at 9pm to minimise light pollution on nearby residents.

                    Pasley Street North entrance improvements

From December 2021 to mid-2022, City of Melbourne improved the entrance to Fawkner Park from Pasley Street North. This included:

                    • Drainage improvements to slow down water and allow it to soak into the ground during high storm water flow events.
                    • De-compacting soil and mulching under existing trees to improve water retention.
                    • 21 new trees, complementing the landscape of Fawkner Park.
                    • Feature seating to protect existing trees from compaction by reducing access to tree root zones.
                    • Garden beds around some trees to improve water and air permeability into their root zones.

                    Basketball court

                    • Relocation of the basketball court and re-landscaping the area with a gently sloping lawn swale to assist drainage.
                    • Relocation of the basketball court closer to the picnic and play area to improve integration between the two spaces.
                    • Additional line markings to allow for other informal recreation uses, making it multi-purpose.

                    Improved access and amenity

                    • Improving the overall amenity of the entrance to reflect the importance of Fawkner Park as a premier park.
                    • New path to improve pedestrian safety and cyclist circulation in the area.
