$3.3m investment to enhance Docklands waterways

Media release, Tuesday 25 May 2021
More than $3.3 million will flow into projects that activate and enhance Docklands waterways, as part of the City of Melbourne’s 2021-22 Budget.

Lord Mayor Sally Capp said the infrastructure will help realise the potential of the Docklands waterfront for residents, businesses and visitors by creating more recreational opportunities in the Victoria Harbour precinct.

"We want to increase opportunities for boating, fishing and kayaking in Docklands and make better use of the magnificent Victoria Harbour and the Yarra-Birrarung," the Lord Mayor said.

"For too long our city has turned its back on its waterways but this investment is an important early step to bringing these areas to life.

"Importantly, these new facilities will help attract people throughout the year to Docklands, which will also provide a boost to local businesses. The reduction in workers and visitors coming into the precinct has had a big impact on Docklands businesses, and we need both long and short-term responses to activate the area."

"We will invest $1.9 million to replace the large vessels berth at Melbourne City Marina. This will allow ships to dock for public displays, which have in the past included Border Force and Sea Shepherd vessels, and Tall Ships Victoria."

City of Melbourne will invest $864,200 towards a two-year $1.3 million project to make Australia Wharf the home of Docklands' charter boat fleet.

"Charter boat operators are passionate and professional companies that can cater to around 950,000 passengers a year. Investing in these facilities creates jobs during construction but also provides ongoing opportunities for local businesses," the Lord Mayor said.

"We want to protect residential peace and amenity while maximising water transport, tourism and the maritime heritage of Docklands."

Health, Wellbeing and Belonging portfolio lead Councillor Olivia Ball said Docklands residents would also benefit from increased recreational facilities.

"We will invest $165,000 in delivering lockable storage for kayaks and fishing equipment at Victoria Harbour. The facility will house between 20 to 35 watercraft that residents in nearby apartments can rent to use on the waterways," Cr Ball said.

"Gliding around Victoria Harbour is one of the most beautiful ways to experience Docklands. By improving facilities we hope more people enjoy what the area has to offer."

The City of Melbourne will invest $300,000 towards a marine operations precinct in the Bolte West Precinct, to create a staging area for water events, create a launching area for small yachts and barges, and the clean ups of spills. A further $166,000 will be invested in general maintenance of its waterways infrastructure.

Docklands boasts 40 hectares of deep and sheltered waters. The precinct is home to five marinas with a total of 295 private berths, 72 visitor berths and 1.5 kilometres of commercial berthing for vessels up to 100 metres in length.
