Media release, Monday 11 December 2017
Lord Mayor Robert Doyle AC today revealed that 14 tonnes of fireworks will light up the city sky during the most spectacular New Year’s Eve celebrations Melbourne has ever seen.

"The Melbourne skyline will sparkle like never before when 14 tonnes of pyrotechnics, half a tonne more than last year's display, are launched from 22 rooftops across the city at the stroke of midnight," the Lord Mayor said.

"It will take a team of 68 pyrotechnicians around a week to install and prepare the fireworks and equipment, the volume of which is equivalent to three B-Double truckloads carrying two 40-foot and three 20-foot shipping containers.

"It will certainly be the biggest fireworks show Melbourne has ever seen: if you can see the city skyline, you will be able to witness the magic of the midnight fireworks.

"Howard & Sons will once again be pulling out all the stops with an array of new floral firework effects, including salvoes of flower shapes such as peonies, dahlias and chrysanthemums."

The midnight fireworks will be synchronised to a specially curated 10 minute soundtrack by Aria nominated Melbourne dance pop duo Client Liaison, which will be broadcast live on FM 99.7 and Channel 7.

The Lord Mayor said security is a top priority for the big event.

"As part of our event planning we've increased the number of security guards we'll have on the ground. They'll be working in tandem with police and our existing network of CCTV cameras and bollards that have been rolled out at key locations across the city," the Lord Mayor said.

"As always, we are working closely with Victoria Police, Emergency Management Victoria and the State Government to ensure everyone has an enjoyable and most importantly safe New Year's Eve."

The Lord Mayor expected almost half a million people to converge on the city to bring in 2018.

"Those planning on coming into the city will be able enjoy the midnight fireworks at the four official Live Sites at Treasury Gardens, Flagstaff Gardens, Docklands and Kings Domain. The sites will be open from 9pm to 1am and feature food outlets and free entertainment, with DJs spinning their turntables well after the final countdown," the Lord Mayor said.

"With such a high volume of people expected in the city it's important that partygoers plan ahead, expect delays, leave the car at home, and take public transport and as always, act responsibly."

The City of Melbourne's New Year's Eve celebrations are alcohol free events and fines apply.
