                    Bedford Street Pocket Park

Bigger and better open spaces are coming to Bedford and Courtney streets, with City of Melbourne commencing works on a new park that will include a playspace and activities area.

We're transforming the existing green spaces in Bedford and Courtney streets – creating approximately 1,500m² of additional open space. Residents and visitors will be able enjoy areas for picnics, barbeques and activities, along with a brand new playground.

To create a cool environment and shade during summer, we're planting a mix of native and exotic plants and trees. We're also installing Water Sensitive Urban Design infrastructure to increase soil moisture and reduce stormwater flows.

Two rounds of community consultation informed the concept design of the new park, and the project is co-funded by City of Melbourne and the Victorian Government through the Suburban Parks Program.

Construction of the Bedford Street Pocket Park will start at the corner of Queensberry and Peel streets in late 2023, with all works expected to be completed in early 2025.

How will the community be impacted?

                    Construction impacts

Works will be carried out between 7am and 5pm on Monday to Friday, with occasional works occurring between 8am and 3pm on Saturdays when required.

During works, we will install temporary fencing around construction sites. Nearby residents and businesses can expect low levels of noise and some traffic disruptions during work hours. Traffic management will be in place to support people moving around the area.

                    Parking changes

Throughout community consultation, we heard that more open space is needed in your neighbourhood. In order to create this new pocket park, we are removing and reconfiguring some car parking. Once the project is complete, 72 car parks will be available for public use (34 car parks will be removed).

To prioritise local resident parking, changes to parking restrictions will be implemented. All parking surrounding the park will be metered to manage demand for the spaces, with local resident permit holders being exempt from paying fees in 1 hour (1P) metered parking areas.

To ensure the new parking provisions meet the needs of local residents, our Parking and Kerbside Management team will be monitoring the changes. We will also check in with the community as part of our Neighbourhood Parking Reviews program.

Parking changes for the Bedford Street Pocket Park are shown in the plan below.

                    Rubbish bin collection

Once construction commences and after the park opens, some rubbish bin collection points will change as our trucks will have reduced access to certain areas. City of Melbourne officers are making contact with impacted residents to work through the proposed changes. View the proposed changes on the bin collection points plan.

                    Road discontinuance

To create the new park, sections of road in Bedford, Capel and Courtney streets will be discontinued. In September 2022, City of Melbourne completed a statutory process as directed by the Local Government Act 1989 to give public notice and hear submissions before making the decision to discontinue the roads.

Council made the decision to discontinue portions of Bedford, Capel and Courtney streets in North Melbourne on 25 October 2022
