Eco Guardians has won the 2014 Melbourne Award for Contribution to Sustainability by a Corporation.

Eco Guardians specialises in economically advantageous, sustainable solutions for a range of problems that today’s businesses face with their environmental obligations. 'The environment should not be treated as a dumping ground'.

The City of Melbourne Resource Recovery Centre in Degraves St, of which a GaiaRecycle food waste dehydrator is a key element, has had a direct, beneficial impact on the immediate area visually and in sustainability terms by providing a waste management solution.

The system has, over a period of 30 weeks, dehydrated some 130 tonnes of putrescible food waste that would otherwise have rotted in landfill, converting it instead into 38 tonnes of sterile, nutrient-rich fertiliser. Landfill costs of $30,000 have been avoided while GHG emissions of 208 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent have been prevented.

Just as importantly, the facility has been visited by dozens of local organisations – commercial, municipal, educational and others – to discover the benefits of the program, promoting discussion and interest in similar initiatives across a range of applications.
