Melbourne’s international reputation as a centre of excellence in bio-medical technology, innovation and research was significantly enhanced last year, when Professor Peter Choong masterminded the world-first 3D heel implant.
The titanium heel replaced the cancerous bone of a Victorian builder, who otherwise would have needed amputation. The device was invented, developed and implanted in Melbourne in a multidisciplinary effort involving surgeons, researchers, universities, a Melbourne biotech company (Anatomics) and CSIRO. The medical breakthrough resulted in world-wide media coverage, including in the UK, US, China, and India, with millions of people hearing about the Melbourne medical miracle that saved a man’s leg.
This case profiles Melbourne’s contribution to cancer care through the national centre for bone cancer surgery at St. Vincent’s Hospital, established by Professor Choong, which attracts surgeons from the Asia Pacific, Continental Europe, and North America. Professor Choong also created a Visiting Fellowship programme at St Vincent’s which brings surgeons to Melbourne for up to 2 years, to learn surgical, research and leadership skills.
