What's on City of Melbourne

Swanston Street redevelopment

In 2012, Swanston Street, Melbourne’s iconic spine, was upgraded to become a more accessible, enjoyable and safer place for everyone to use.

Key features of Swanston Street include four tram zones which have no vehicle access, and an elevated road for cyclists. The tram zones feature improved facilities for commuters including more shelters, seating and electronic next tram arrival information. For more information about Melbourne’s tram network, please visit Yarra Trams. Other sections of Swanston Street have limited vehicle access to permit holders only. For information on how to apply for an access and parking permit visit Authorised vehicle access and parking – Swanston Street.

Importantly, Swanston Street is still a street and Victorian road rules apply to everyone.
