Developed in consultation with riding groups, the Motorcycle Plan 2015-18 recognises motorcycling as a space-saving, convenient and low-cost mode of transport. It also outlines measures to better integrate motorcycles into Melbourne’s road network.
To improve the safety and attractiveness of motorcycling, the plan proposes a number of actions including:
- Consider motorcyclists when designing and maintaining local roads.
- Identify possible safety hazards for motorcyclists, such as slippery sections of road.
- Increase free parking in the city centre for motorbikes.
- Convert 20 existing on-street car parking spots into free corrals dedicated to motorcycles.
- Study central city footpaths which may cause difficulties for pedestrians with disabilities.
- Support government training programs for motorcyclists
- Educate all road users about motorcycling safety.
These actions also form part of our Road Safety Plan which was adopted in 2013.
