                    Car share

There are nearly 600 car share spaces located in the City of Melbourne, and vehicles are deployed both in the central city and the surrounding suburbs, so chances are there’s a vehicle near you.

The following car share companies have agreements with us to use on-street parking spaces:

You can find the location and availability of vehicles near you by visiting the websites of each company.

What is car share and how does it work?

Car share services provide cars on-demand, for rent either by the hour or by the day, and with no parking hassles when done.

If your car is driven less than 15,000 km per year, like the average Australian car, car share can save you money and may even shrink your carbon footprint by reducing your car use.

Car share programs reduce car ownership and travel. Car share enables people to walk, ride bikes and use public transport for the bulk of their trips while having access to a private vehicle for infrequent trips where car is the most convenient mode.

It's also perfect for people who want to sell or avoid owning a second car. Businesses can make use of car share to avoid the need to buy and maintain fleet vehicles and pay for space to park them in.

As of 2022, the Transport Affordability Index prepared by the Australian Automobile Association shows that ownership-based costs like loan repayments and insurance are first and fourth largest components of transport expenditure respectively.

With the average costs of owning a car fluctuating, comparing your personal expenditure to the available options may show that car sharing could be a great option for you.

                    Did you know?
Every car share vehicle removes nine privately owned cars off the road and reduces car usage up to 50 per cent.

                    How does car sharing work?

You register with a car share company, pay a membership fee, and book a car by the hour or day. Cars are picked up and dropped off at clearly signed and easy to find car share bays nearest to your location. You can compare price structures, locations and service provision to work out which companies best suit you and register on their website.

What is the City of Melbourne doing?

We work with car share operators to deliver services by facilitating access to kerbside space, in line with Council policies and projects.

The City of Melbourne is currently developing a new car share policy to "encourage accelerated growth of the car share fleet" (Transport Strategy 2030, p.58), this will replace the current policy that was adopted in July 2015 and updated in 2018. This policy will prioritise greater availability of car share vehicles where they are in the most demand.
