The revised City of Melbourne Draft Street Activity Policy is set to build on the city’s street trade culture and ensure that people walking through the streets of Melbourne have a pleasant and welcoming experience.
Endorsed at Future Melbourne Committee on Tuesday 12 April, the new Policy and Policy Operating Statements, which will build on Melbourne’s internationally recognised street trading culture and promote diversity as well as new opportunities for local traders, comes into effect on 1 July, 2011.
What is street trading and why was the Policy reviewed?
Street trading includes Flower, Fruit and Newspaper (Convenience) Kiosks, Street Cylinders, temporary stalls at events and festivals, street markets, buskers, horse drawn vehicles, handbills, fundraising and spruikers. City of Melbourne has reviewed this Street Activity Policy to ensure that when people walk through our city, they have a pleasant experience that builds on Melbourne’s existing street trading culture, adding to our reputation as a world class city.
