                    Princess Theatre forecourt streetscape upgrades

Princess Theatre forecourt showing the temporary works completed in 2018.
City of Melbourne has created a new, more welcoming area in front of the iconic Princess Theatre.

In 2018 temporary works were carried out on the road and footpath area in Spring Street outside the Princess Theatre to manage large audiences onto the roadway. This included the temporary closure of a section of the Spring Street carriageway. These works have now been made permanent, resulting in a net increase of approximately 240 square metres of bluestone footpath area.

Works commenced in mid-January 2022 and were completed in late May 2022.

                    The new streetscape includes:

                    • 240 square metres of new bluestone footpaths
                    • a raised asphalt crossing at the Little Bourke Street and Spring Street intersection
                    • garden bed with seating walls
                    • new street furniture and installation of protective bollards and bluestone blocks.

The new Princess Theatre forecourt provides a safer and more comfortable space for both pedestrians and theatre goers, reducing congestion in the area on show days.

Concept plan of the proposed changes. Along the north east along Nicholson Street there is an expanded garden bed with a bluestone seating wall, with a new palm tree among the three existing trees. The bluestone pavement area in front of the theatre is expanded and protective bollards have been added.
