                    Gateway to GMH

We’re partnering with the Victorian Government on the planning, design and delivery of urban renewal in Fishermans Bend.
This includes the Gateway to GMH project, which will introduce safe cycling, street greening, integrated public art and new technologies along Turner Street and Graham Street, linking with newly improved cycling conditions off-road along Lorimer Street and a connection north to River Esplanade.

The Fishermans Bend urban renewal area includes the Fishermans Bend National Employment and Innovation Cluster (NEIC), which will be home to 40,000 workers and the Victorian Government owned former GMH (General Motors Holden) site. As part of the $2.7 billion Building Works package announced by the Victorian Government in May 2020, we’ve partnered with the Department of Jobs, Precincts and Regions to deliver early works on the Gateway to GMH project in Turner Street.

We've just completed major landscape works on Turner and Graham streets creating a greener, better connected streetscape. These works were the first step in Turner Street’s transformation into a key multi-modal movement corridor from the former GMH site to the city and other innovation precincts. So far, the project has delivered:
                    • new asphalt and recycled glass pavements for pedestrians
                    • new concrete walking and cycling path on the southern side of Turner Street, between Graham and Salmon streets
                    • shrubs and other understory plants
                    • traffic calming measures such as a traffic island and speed cushions in the roadway
                    • new underground electrical services
                    • drainage upgrades.

We're installing eight smart poles in Turner and Graham streets which will collect vital information such as weather patterns and foot traffic so we can better plan for the future of communities living and working in Fisherman's Bend. These works are expected to be completed by early 2024.

                    Community consultation

In September and October 2021 we asked the community for feedback on how we can improve the feel and function of Turner Street and the broader Fishermans Bend area for people walking, riding and driving.

The community was encouraged to review the changes proposed for the Gateway to GMH project. This community feedback helped shape the final early works design.

Fishermans Bend Digital Innovation Challenge 2024

We are launching the next Fishermans Bend Digital Innovation challenge on 18 April 2024. Similar to the first Challenge, the winning idea will be piloted in the public realm in Fishermans Bend. This year’s theme is ‘A Regenerative City’. Head to Participate Melbourne to learn more.
