                    Carlton Gardens irrigation upgrade

                    We’ve installed a new irrigation system at the northern end of Carlton Gardens.

                    ​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​Carlton Gardens is a key part of Melbourne's urban open space network and was recognised as World Heritage Site in 2004. It contains the Royal Exhibition Building, Melbourne Museum and an abundance of natural and landscaped features. 

                    To maintain the health of the grass, plants and trees, City of Melbourne installed a new irrigation system at the northern end of the Gardens. 

                    Works started in May 2023 and were complete by early October 2023. 

                    The scope of the works included: 

                    • installing temporary fencing around the works areas
                    • digging into the ground to remove the old irrigation system and install the new system
                    • undertaking water supply upgrades at multiple locations. 

                     To ensure that green space remained accessible to the community, the works took place in stages: 

                    • Stage one (along Rathdowne Street) 
                    • Stage two (along Carlton Street) 
                    • Stage three (along Nicholson Street near the Carlton Tennis Club)
