Description/Notable FeaturesNotable features include corner oriel and turret, slate roof, terracotta ridging, intact fenestration and relief lettering. Stylistically the Dan O' Connell Hotel appears to have been rebuilt about the same time as the Perservance Hotel, Brunswick St, Fitzroy. The architect for this later hotel, erected in 1911, was either a Mr Weaver (CUB architect) or Sydney Smith and Ogg. Given the similarity in design either of these could have been the architect for the Dan O' Connell. The building has a frontage to Princess Street and Canning Street, with the later expressed with a central decorative pediment and central group of three windows. Prominence is given to the corner by a projecting turret or bartizan. The red brick facade (now painted brown) is divided horizontally by two strong bands of cement render. The top band forms a parapet and has raised lettering bearing the name of the hotel. Relief render decoration is also incorporated on the pediment and turret.
Statement of SignificanceThis building is significant as a substantially intact Edwardian Hotel. It is one of a number of hotels erected during this period with a corner turret ; a picturesque element found in much commercial and residential work of the period. Although the brickwork and render have been painted, the colours approximate the original finish. This building is significant as a substantially intact Edwardian Hotel.
Recommended AlterationsPainted brickwork ( extremely inappropriate - remove by approved method)
