HistoryThis building was first listed in the 1863 directory and was first occupied by George Boyne a paper hanger and painter. The premises saw a variety of uses over the years including a butchers shop and bootmaker's shop; the intersection of Barkly, Faraday and Canning Streets formerly being a small shopping precinct. Today the premises are used as a residence.
Description/Notable FeaturesNotable features include an intact shop front. Early ashlar front, simple design - one room depth upstairs. The building is constructed of timber with a work front in the form of false timber ashlar and side and rear elevations of weatherboard. The upper storey windows are small and the facade is capped by an unusual timber parapet. The shopfront is a very early example and incorporates subtle mouldings in the column. It is assumed that the building fabric dates from the time of eviction.
Statement of SignificanceThis former shop is significant as a surviving timber shop of the 1860's. It has unusual details, especially the timber parapet. The intactness of the building, including its shopfront is especially significant. This diminutive building is a strong reminder of the earliest development in this locality.
Recommended AlterationsBricked up stair board ( sympathetic - reinstate sympathetic alternative) Stripped timber ( inappropriate - paint)
