History | The house at 29 Barkly Street appears to have been constructed c. 1867. Sands & McDougall directories indicate that Owen O' Callaghan, a detective, occupied a house on this site from c.1867 until c.1900. |
---|
Description/Notable Features | The house at 29 Barkly Street is a Victorian double-storey brick residence with a hipped tiled roof concealed behind a parapet. The house adopts a terrace form, and has a double-storey verandah with cast iron lacework friezes, terminated at each end by rendered wing walls. The cast iron balustrading does not appear to be original . Windows are timber-framed double-hung sashes. Alterations include the painting of the brickwork and the recladding of the roof in terracotta tiles. The iron palisade fence appears to be original. |

Statement of Significance | This house is of local aesthetic interest. The house, possibly dating from the 1860's, is a typical and relatively intact example of a nineteenth century Italianate style terrace which is an important element in the streetscape. |
