                    Melbourne 1950–1959

                    Melbourne 1950–1959 was a photographic exhibition exploring the changing face of the city in a decade of radical transformation.

                     

                    20 June to 30 August 2003

                    It focused on the architectural surface of the city, the first skyscrapers and the demolition of iconic Victorian buildings, as well as the deeper cultural transformation brought about by the influx of immigrants to the city during this period.

                    Using the vibrant photographs of Laurie Richards and Mark Strizic, among others, the exhibition prompted visitors to reflect on how the city has changed since the 1950s.

                    Emma Willoughby has a BA (Hons) from the University of Melbourne and an MA in gallery and museum studies from Monash University. She now lives in the United States, where she is working on her doctorate in history at Cornell University.

                    Emma worked as a curator at Museum Victoria and for the Anniversary of Federation, and as a curator and consultant at the City of Melbourne. Her research ranges from a study of the 1907 Women's Work Exhibition to 18th-century American captivity narratives.
