                    2013 Melburnian of the Year

                    Major Brendan Nottle

                    Major Brendan Nottle
Major Brendan Nottle was named Melburnian of the Year in 2013 in recognition of his compassionate and tireless efforts to help homeless and disadvantaged people.

Born and bred in Melbourne, Major Nottle leads Salvos Melbourne Project 614, seeking out those living on society’s fringe and providing them with the help they need. He works on establishing one-on-one relationships with the homeless and his patience, humour and dedication have won him universal respect. He is a Salvos veteran of over 20 years and leads a small team of dedicated staff and more than 1000 volunteers.

Brendan oversees the daily operations of the Salvation Army in the central city, which sees him at work seven days a week helping diverse people with many challenges. He is the face of our beloved Salvos, has given them a higher profile and has selflessly committed his life to helping Melbourne’s homeless people. His ability to build bridges between people and his passion for improving services has seen him continually find new ways to help the city's most needy.

In October 2017 Major Nottle completed an epic 40 day trek from Melbourne to Canberra’s Parliament House to raise awareness of homelessness and to meet with key government representatives to discuss the establishment of a national nonpartisan strategy to help end homelessness in Australia. Along his walk Major Nottle visited regional towns in Victoria and New South Wales to understand first-hand the challenges these communities face as they tackle the complex issues contributing to homelessness.

Brendan is a member of the Premier’s Ice Action Taskforce and the Victorian Housing Ministers Rough Sleeper’s Roundtable. Brendan was a Moomba Monarch in 2013 and has been the Collingwood Football Club chaplain for 16 years. Brendan is married to Sandra and has three daughters.
