JJ Holland Park synthetic sports field

On Monday 25 October 2010 The Lord Mayor, Robert Doyle and Melbourne MP Bronwyn Pike officially launched City of Melbourne’s synthetic sports field located at JJ Holland Park. 

The sports field is the first of its kind in Australia, accommodating a variety of community sporting use including soccer, AFL, rugby, lacrosse, touch football and cricket. The field satisfies AFL/Cricket Australia, IRB and FIFA requirements for synthetic surfaces.

Installing synthetic sports surfaces is a key City of Melbourne strategy to manage the ongoing impact of climate change and meeting increasing demand on sports fields.

The installation at JJ Holland Park is jointly funded by City of Melbourne and Sport and Recreation Victoria.

Key booking information:

  • The centre pitch can be transformed to accommodate cricket during summer and is converted to a full cover to play winter sport such as AFL and soccer

Measurements:

Surface Area – Approximately 10,000m2

Soccer pitch – 100 x 64 metres (FIFA standard)

AFL field – Approximately 105 x 85 metres

Cricket, synthetic and outfield – 100 metre diameter

  • Lighting levels are programmed at 50 lux and meet the Australian Standard for training activities at City of Melbourne approved times of use.
  • Other infrastructure includes goals to accommodate soccer and AFL. Goals can be configured based on the type of use being conducted i.e. training or competition and the type of sport.
  • All users are required to conduct an inspection and assessment of the sports field prior to use. Users of the sports field, during the summer months, take responsibility for undertaking an inspection and assessment of the field and inform participants of risks associated with playing over the exposed cricket wicket located in the centre of the ground.
    • No infrastructure permitted e.g. pegged marquees
    • No litter/gum or rubbish permitted on the surface
    • Strictly No Smoking
