New central city night-time parking hours
Paid on-street parking hours in the central city changed on 1 July 2010.
What changes have been made?
- Previously, paid parking hours in the central city were 7.30am to 7.30pm.
- There is now a $4 fee to park in the city after 7.30pm and remain parked for the rest of the night.
- As a general practice, please ensure you observe the parking signs when parking.
Where will the new fee apply?
The new fee will apply in the central city, which is the current $4 per hour tariff zone.
What will the new central city parking signs say?
- Signs affected by the new $4.00 night time parking fee will show an end time of 8.30pm Mon-Sat.
- Read the signs carefully, as there are a few different sign layouts to reflect the local parking conditions.
- For example, in the case of 1 hour parking in the central city, the sign will have two panels.
- The first panel will read 1P meter 7.30am – 7.30pm Mon-Sat.
- The second panel will read P meter 7.30pm – 8.30pm Mon-Sat.
- This arrangement of panels will give you the option to either:
- park from 6.30pm to 7.30pm, as per the sign at a cost of $4
- park from 6.30pm until the end of the night, as long as you pay the $8 fee (two hours at $4 per hour).
If I arrive at 6.30pm, how much will I have to pay to stay the rest of the night?
- If the sign reads ‘until 7.30pm,’ you will only be required to pay the hourly rate of $4 to stay parked for the rest of the night.
- If the sign reads ‘until 8.30pm’, you will be required to pay $8 to stay for the rest of the night.
If I arrive in the city after 8.30pm, will I still have to pay to park in the city?
- No. If you arrive in the city after 8.30pm and park in an on-street metered space, you will not have to pay to park.
- The most important thing is that you read the signs carefully.
For all other areas outside the central city, signage will remain the same.
- Always check the parking signs.
Why do I have to pay until 8.30pm in some areas and only until 7.30pm in others?
- There are a range of meters and parking spaces in the central city, to ensure better access for all who drive into the city.
- The new night time parking fee generally allows you to park from 6.30pm to 8.30pm and remain legally parked for the rest of the night.
- Always check the parking signs.
Do I need to return to my meter?
- If you are parking in the central city in a 1P, 2P or longer term on-street car space, you will be able to pay your meter from 6.30pm to 8.30pm and stay for the rest of the night.
- You do not need to return to your meter.
