History and vision

City of Melbourne, with the support of the State Government’s Living Libraries grant, has transformed the former JH Boyd Girls High School (207-229 City Road, Southbank) into a vibrant new community hub for Southbank. Preserving the original heritage character of the building, the design has improved its sustainability and created new spaces to accommodate a range of community services and exciting new possibilities for the Southbank community.

At Boyd you will not only find Southbank Library, but also Artist studios, Maternal and Child Health Services, Meeting rooms, outdoor spaces, a café and more. The remainder of the Boyd site is being redeveloped in the coming year and will include a 2500 m2 urban park plus a residential and commercial building.

Southbank Library at Boyd floor plan and collections

The Southbank Library at Boyd has a reader-friendly layout, similar to that of a book shop, making it much easier for you to find your next great read. Rather than being organised by Dewey, the non-fiction is arranged by a unique subject-based system with books clustered by popular topics such as Home and Lifestyle, Food and Drink, Arts and Culture and Travel.

Outside the bounds: Melbourne's history from Southbank

What happened on the south bank of the Yarra that caused Southbank to be considered ‘outside the bounds’ of the township proper? Join us on a walking tour around the area with Robyn Annear, author of the much loved Bearbrass: imagining early Melbourne.

Reading circle

Southbank library will be hosting Melbourne Library Service’s first public reading circle. Beginning in August, a monthly informal session will be held on the first Tuesday of each month.

Unlike a traditional structured book club, where everyone reads the same book every month and gets together to discuss it, a reading circle is an opportunity to tell others what you have been reading and to get ideas about what to read next. Put simply, they are a place to talk about books: those you love, those you hate, and those you still haven't discovered!

When: First Tuesday of every month from 5:45 – 6:45pm, starting Tuesday 7 August
Where: Southbank Library at Boyd
Cost: Free
Bookings are essential: 9658 8300

Docklands Library and Community Centre

To be located at the intersection where Collins Street will soon meet Bourke Street, the new Docklands Library and Community Centre development is a direct result of community wide consultation undertaken in 2011. A new library and diverse use community space was identified as a key priority by the community as part of City of Melbourne and Places Victoria's community planning for Docklands’ second decade of development.

Now, with its construction due to commence in the coming months, City of Melbourne now seeking community input to the life of the library, it's proposed themes and functions.

The Hub is located at 80 Harbour Esplanade, Docklands and you can drop in at any of the times above. Find out more about Docklands at melbourne.vic.gov.au/docklands or phone the City of Melbourne on 9658 9658.

The Docklands Library and Community Centre is being delivered through a unique tri-partnership model between Places Victoria, Lend Lease and the City of Melbourne.
