What's on City of Melbourne

Street cleaning

The City of Melbourne has high standards for the cleaning of streets, laneways, footpaths and drains. Residential streets are cleaned every week.

CBD streets and laneways are cleaned every day, with higher usage areas often being cleaned many times throughout the day.

The City of Melbourne’s street cleaning services include removing the following items from public spaces, streets and footpaths:

  • litter and waste
  • illegally dumped commercial and domestic waste
  • hard rubbish
  • green waste
  • rubble, dirt and silt
  • oil spills
  • syringes
  • animal droppings
  • dead animals
  • weeds, leaves, small tree branches and pollen
  • bodily wastes including faeces, blood and vomit

To report any of the above items for removal, please contact the City of Melbourne on (03) 9658 9658.

What you can do

  • Obey all parking signs and restrictions. Street cleaning is difficult when cars are parked on the side of the road outside designated parking times.
  • Report overflowing bins to the City of Melbourne.
  • Report any commercial waste or hard rubbish found in laneways, streets, median strips or parks to the City of Melbourne.

Dog waste

If you own a dog, by law you must collect and dispose of your dog’s droppings responsibly and always carry an appropriate container such as a plastic bag or pooper scooper (City of Melbourne Activities Local Law 1999).

Dog droppings in public areas are unsightly and costly to remove and they can pose a serious risk to the environment by contaminating waterways and beaches.

The penalty for dog owners who fail to collect and dispose of their dog's droppings is between $100 and $250.

POOch Pouch

The POOch Pouch is a small zippered pouch designed to be filled with dog waste bags or plastic bags to help dog owners clean up after their pets in public places. It can be permanently attached to a dog lead near the handle.
The City of Melbourne encourages residents to use the POOch Pouch and ensure dog waste is disposed of thoughtfully in rubbish bins in the municipality. Free POOch Pouches are available from the City of Melbourne.
