The Hub

The City of Melbourne opened ‘The Hub @ Docklands’ in July 2007, as a community facility for residents and visitors of Docklands.

Since then, The Hub has established itself as a centre for community activities in Docklands. 

Our aim

The City of Melbourne is working hard to foster community activities and increase awareness of The Hub.

What's on at the Hub

Move ‘n’ groove at the Hub – Easter School Holiday Program

  • Melbourne Library Service Community Wall Hanging
    How do you move around Docklands? Do you walk, dance, drive or ride? Come help us create a Community Patchwork Wall Hanging about movement. Each child will have one fabric square to decorate which will become part of the project. Monday 7 April, 9.30am to 10.30am. Ages 3 - 7 years.
  • Mini Sports
    Wear your sports gear for this action packed session. Kelly Mini sports will be providing the professional instructors to introduce a variety different ball sports. Tuesday 8 and 15 April, two sessions: 9.30am to 10.15am (2-3 years) and 10.30am to 11.15am (4-5 years)
  • Autumn Fairy Dancing Workshops
    Dress up in your fairy finery and come along for a crispy, crunchy good time! Activities will include: fairy disco dancing, ribbon twirling, rainbow walking, games, storytelling & making an autumn fairy wishing tree. Even more fun that a pile of freshly fallen leaves. Wednesday 9 and 16 April, two sessions: 9.30am to 10.15am (2-3 years) and 10.30am to 11.15am (4-5 years)

Easter and Anzac Day Public holiday closures

  • For the Easter holiday period the hub will close at 5pm on Thursday 17 April and re-open at 8.30am on Tuesday 22 April
  • The hub will be closed on Friday 25 April for the Anzac Day Public Holiday

Services at The Hub

Information on Docklands and City of Melbourne Services

Pick up a great range of city maps and brochures, information on local events and community groups, Docklands publications and magazines, read the latest newspapers and more.

Melbourne Library Service

Apply on-line for a membership and collect your library card at The Hub. Members can return books via the 24hrs return chute, reserve books online and organise delivery to The Hub to pick up during opening hours. For more information visit melbournelibraryservice.com.au

Free wireless internet

Bring your laptop with a wireless modem down to The Hub and surf the web for free. During opening hours, you can relax indoors in one of our comfy chairs or after hours enjoy wireless connection from the outdoor decking.  Available daily.

Daily papers

Copies of the Age and the Herald Sun are available for you to come in and read during opening hours.

Programs at the Hub

A variety of social and recreational activities operate at The Hub. Check at The Hub or community notice boards for more information.

Playgroups are great way for children to learn through play, and for families in the community to connect and meet.

To join a playgroup at The Hub please contact Kirsty: kirbat@melbourne.vic.gov.au  Please include the following information in your e-mail:

  • Your name
  • child’s name
  • child’s date of birth
  • contact phone number
  • residential address
  • preferred time to attend playgroup.

Stompers: Join us for a half hour session of stories, songs, rhymes and best of all FUN! Sessions are for children between 18 months to 3 years. Mondays at 11am (excluding public and school holidays). No bookings required.

Lunchtime table tennis: Are you spending your lunch breaks at your desk? Do you need some fresh air? If so, come in for a free game of table tennis. Wednesdays and Fridays, 12pm to 2pm.  First and third Thursdays of the month, 12pm to 2pm. Bookings essential.

Evening table tennis:  Do you want to meet other players? Come down to The Hub for an evening table tennis game. Tuesdays, 8pm-10pm. Gold coin donation. Enrolment essential prior to attending.

Free Lunchbox sessions: Bring your lunch and learn something new or sit back and listen to some beautiful live music. Second Thursday of the month, 12.30pm to 1.15pm. Bookings required.

Tai Chi on the decking: Tai Chi is a Chinese internal martial art. It is tranquil and graceful way of keeping fit, improving your health, and helping to prevent stresses and strains of modern life. Thursdays, 7.30am to 8.30am. No bookings required. On rainy days, classes will be held inside.

Cost: $5 per person, per session.  This program is run in partnership with YuLong Wushu-Tai Chi.

RunDocklands: Runners of all levels are welcome to join us for a structured training session to improve their running technique. Meet every Monday at noon. Sessions are provided by a qualified trainer. Cost: $50 for 10 sessions. Please contact us for start dates.

The Hub for hire

What is available?

The Hub's three main areas are available for hire – the Cinema Room, the Atrium and The Longroom:

  • The Cinema Room: Ideal for presentations, movie screenings, meetings or classes. It caters for up to 35 people (theatrette style) or 20 people (boardroom style). The room contains an inbuilt data projector, screen, whiteboard and TV/DVD facilities.
  • The Atrium: The largest open space in The Hub. During the day it acts as an information centre, containing pamphlets, maps and notices for visitors and members of the local community. The space is available for use after hours and can cater for activities such as functions (up to 55 people), large meetings, movement classes and rehearsals.
  • The Longroom: Ideal for smaller meetings. It caters for up to 18 people (theatre style) or 10 people (boardroom style). The room contains a TV, DVD player and a whiteboard.

Kitchen facilities are available, including a fridge and microwave. Plunger coffee, water jugs, crockery, cutlery, cups, mugs and glasses are also available.

How much does it cost?

The cost of hire varies depending on the type of organisation using the space, and the type of activity being conducted. A full fee schedule is available on request. All users are required to pay a security deposit of $300. This amount is refundable subject to conditions being met.

Bookings are confirmed once this form is processed and the date is confirmed when full payment is received by the Community Hub's Officer. Applications can also be made by groups wishing to use the Hub on a regular basis.
