Southbank Structure Plan – a 30 year vision
The Southbank Structure Plan 2010 was endorsed by the Melbourne City Council’s Future Melbourne Committee on Tuesday 14 September 2010.
The Plan provides a new vision and strategy for the future development of Southbank, helping it become a more lively, accessible, liveable and sustainable neighbourhood.
The Plan is part of the City of Melbourne’s commitment to delivering the Southbank Plan (2007). It is also the realisation of a number of key strategic policies including the Future Melbourne Community Plan, and the Municipal Strategic Statement.
The Southbank Structure Plan proposes the most radical revamp that the precinct has seen in its 30-year history and will shape the neighbourhood for the next 30 years.
Improvements are identified for: commercial, retail and community infrastructure, a better street environment for walking and cycling and new and improved public open spaces. These improvements will make the Southbank precinct a better place to live and do business, an easier place to move around and a far more interesting place to visit.
The Plan includes cutting-edge proposals for integrated energy and water efficiencies as a system across the whole of Southbank. New buildings and old will meet standards and green roofs will be the norm.
Implementation activity
The Council is implementing a number of the actions from the structure plan as controls in the Melbourne Planning Scheme through Planning Scheme Amendment C171.
