                    A number of significant planning and infrastructure projects in the City of Melbourne are led by state and federal government, public sector agencies and private enterprise.

                    ​​​​​​The City of Melbourne is a key stakeholder in these projects and acts on behalf of the community.

                    Fishermans Bend Urban Renewal

                    The 455 hectare Fishermans Bend urban renewal area, located approximately one kilometre south west of Melbourne's central business district, is Australia’s largest urban renewal project. It has been declared a site of state significance and rezoned as part of an expanded Capital City Zone. The area is expected to accommodate around 40,000 jobs and 80,000 residents.

                    Metro Tunnel Project

                    The Metro Tunnel is a Victorian Government $11 billion major public transport project that will enable our train network to cater for Melbourne's population growth. 

                    City of Melbourne is a strategic partner in this city shaping project, which is being delivered by Rail Projects Victoria (formerly known as Melbourne Metro Rail Authority). 

                    The scope of this project is contained almost entirely within the City of Melbourne. The project is due for completion in 2025 and will deliver more trains more often to and from the city's fastest growing suburbs.

                    Plan Melbourne

                    In May 2014, the Victorian Government released Plan Melbourne, a metropolitan planning strategy to guide our city's growth to 2050.

                    It reflects a long‐term vision for housing, increasing jobs and liveability, integrating public transport and infrastructure and addressing climate change.

                    Port Capacity Project – Webb Dock expansion

                    Lead by the Port of Melbourne Corporation, the $1.6 billion Port Capacity​ Project will expand Melbourne’s port capacity by redeveloping the operational areas of the port and establishing a new container terminal and an automotive terminal at Webb Dock. The project includes extensive buffer works to enhance and improve the foreshore amenity.

                    Inner Melbourne Action Plan (IMAP)

                    Inner Melbourne Action Plan is a framework for the future growth and development of the inner Melbourne region. It is part of a regional council response to the Victorian Government’s Melbourne 2030 strategy.

                    West Gate Tunnel Project

                    The Victorian Government, in partnership with Transurban, is delivering the West Gate Tunnel Project (formerly Western Distributor). The Western Distributor Authority is the government body responsible for the management and delivery of the project. 

                    The project includes new tunnels under Yarraville, the widening of the West Gate Freeway, new bridges across the Maribyrnong River and an elevated freeway connecting to CityLink, the Port of Melbourne, Footscray Road, Dynon Road and Wurundjeri Way. The Port to City section of the project is within the City of Melbourne. 

                    The project is due for completion in 2022.
