Melbourne’s Chinatown, Greek and Italian cultural precincts will be getting a makeover between 2009–2011. Visit Cultural precincts – 2009–11 works for full details.
The City of Melbourne and Victorian Government entered into a partnership in 2008 to create the City of Melbourne Cultural Precinct Enhancement Program. The aim is to improve and expand on the precincts' existing strengths.
The Victorian Government has committed $8 million and the City of Melbourne has committed $2.2 million to the project. This will fund the restoration of significant laneways, street beautification, public art, landscaping and lighting.
Funds will also boost resources for the communities to enhance and showcase their culture and heritage.
The City of Melbourne’s Cultural Precinct Enhancement Program focuses on:
- Chinatown (Little Bourke Street, Melbourne)
- Greek precinct (Lonsdale Street, Melbourne)
- Lygon Street cultural precinct (Carlton)
Melbourne's cultural precincts – strategic frameworks
'A Strategic Framework for Melbourne’s Cultural Precincts' was developed in 2007, providing an overview of each of the three precincts as well as the long-term vision for each area.
