What's on City of Melbourne

Wheels and Heels

The City of Melbourne’s Wheels and Heels program has been an opportunity to help improve transport options within local areas in the municipality.

The Wheels and Heels program focused on making sustainable transport such as walking, cycling and access to public transport easier for everyone. The program has also focused on vehicle parking options in targeted local areas.

About the program

Through Wheels and Heels the City of Melbourne asked targeted communities for suggestions on how to make sustainable transport easier to use and access in their local areas.

The City of Melbourne is now using collected suggestions to help make cycling and walking safer and more convenient and to make parking easier for residents.

We are committed to ensuring our residents, local businesses and visitors have easy access to sustainable transport options. We want to encourage more Melburnians to choose to walk, cycle or use public transport because it’s easy, safe, affordable – and because it’s better for our health and the environment.

North and West Melbourne Wheels and Heels

The Wheels and Heels program has already been introduced to some suburbs. Visit Parking permits for more information.

Wheels and Heels South Yarra

The City of Melbourne has asked local residents and workers about their transport needs. Through these surveys, the following areas were identified as needing work:

  • connections between Fawkner Park, the Royal Botanic Gardens and Albert Park need improving
  • pedestrian and shared path directional signage could be improved
  • significant on-road bicycle routes such as Commercial Road could be improved with coloured pavement treatment
  • schools in South Yarra should be invited to join the TravelSmart Schools Program

The results of the Wheels and Heels consultation in South Yarra was used to develop a draft South Yarra Wheels and Heels Plan:

Wheels and Heels Southbank

Through holding community forums, an ambitious list of suggested transport improvements were collected by the City of Melbourne.

The City of Melbourne is reviewing these to identify which can be achieved by Council alone, and which will require collaboration with the Victorian Government and other agencies. A draft plan will be available for review when this process is complete.

Wheels and Heels Kensington

The City of Melbourne Wheels and Heels program has consulted with the community in Kensington to discover local transport issues.

Common issues raised showed that residents and workers are concerned about:

  • safety at the intersection of Bellair Street and Macaulay Road
  • surfaces at the Moonee Ponds Creek Trail entrance and exit
  • the visibility of on-road cycle paths throughout Kensington
  • the location of the pedestrian crossing on Kensington Road, including the intersection of Kensington Road and Altona Street

The results of the Wheels and Heels consultation in Kensington have been used to develop a plan of potential improvements for the area:
