Victorian Opera has won the 2016 Melbourne Award for Contribution to Profile by a Corporation.

Victorian Opera was formed in 2005 to provide Melbourne with a major state opera company, and has since presented 10 vibrant seasons in various Melbourne venues, reaching over 180,000 people and growing their audience by 500 per cent.

They have regularly collaborated with some of Australia’s leading companies, venues and learning institutions – including the Malthouse Theatre, The Australian Ballet, Australian Youth Orchestra, Circus Oz, Deakin Motion Lab and the University of Melbourne – to keep opera and musical theatre engaging and exciting for existing and new audiences.

Employing hundreds across the theatre industry and recruiting some of the finest singers from Australia and around the world, Victorian Opera are committed to making opera accessible by offering the lowest average ticket price of any professional opera company in Australia, providing tactile tours and audio description for the vision impaired, and relaxed performances for children of varied abilities.

They have inspired over 500 young singers through their youth opera program, developed over 30 emerging artists, and their Education Program reaches over 7500 students and teachers annually through incursions and excursions to Arts Centre Melbourne to experience opera.
