Women in Super Mother’s Day Classic has won the 2012 Melbourne Award for Contribution to Community by a Community Organisation.

Melbourne’s Mother’s Day Classic marked its 15th year in May 2012 with a record 44,000 entrants walking or running around the city’s landmark Tan Track and Alexandra Gardens.

The event has become one of Melbourne’s most special days, providing people and communities with a great way to celebrate Mother’s Day and raise funds for breast cancer awareness and research. Many participants wear a tribute card during their walk. Some run in remembrance of loved ones lost to breast cancer; others show their support to someone undergoing treatment. These cards are a poignant reminder that one in nine women is diagnosed with breast cancer by the age of 85.

Since it started, the Mother’s Day Classic has expanded to more than 50 other locations across Australia and is now the largest fun run in the country. This year a record $4 million was raised, taking the total tally to almost $15 million.
