What types of parking permits are available?

Parking permit options include a combination of the following:

  • Single vehicle registration parking permit
  • Dual vehicle registration parking permit
  • Transferable parking permit.

What is the difference between a ‘Single vehicle registration’ and ‘Dual vehicle registration’ parking permit?

A ‘Single vehicle registration’ parking permit lists only one vehicle registration number on the permit and is non transferable.

A ‘Dual vehicle registration’ parking permit lists two vehicle registration numbers on the one permit, but can only be used on one of the vehicles at a time. This permit is easily transferable between the two vehicles. The vehicle that does not have the permit displayed must abide by the standard street parking restrictions/hours within that area. This permit is particularly suitable for residents who may have access to company vehicles.

What is a transferable parking permit?

A transferable parking permit is non vehicle registration specific parking permit and can be used on any vehicle. This type of permit is usually used for visitors.

What permit type combinations are available?

You can select from one of the following options:

  • One (1) single vehicle registration permit ($20)
  • One (1) transferable permit ($20)
  • Two (2) single vehicle registration permits (Total $40)
  • One (1) single vehicle registration permit PLUS one (1) dual vehicle registration permit (Total $40)
  • One (1) single vehicle registration permit PLUS one (1) transferable permit (Total $40)
  • One (1) dual vehicle registration permit ($20)
  • One (1) dual vehicle registration permit PLUS one (1) transferable permit (Total $40)
  • Two (2) dual vehicle registration residential parking permits (Total $40)

How many permits am I eligible for?

A maximum of two permits per property will be issued, one of which may be a transferable permit, with the exception of Areas 7, 12, 14, 15, 17, 18 and 19 where residents are only entitled to one residential parking permit or one transferable parking permit per property.

Will visitors be able to park outside my home?

Yes, visitors can park outside of your home using a transferable parking permit.

My properties certificate of occupancy was issued after 25 March 2010 (Areas 3B, 7, 12, 15A, 16, 18) or after 25 October 2011 (area 8). Can I still get a parking permit?

No. You will not have access to a parking permit under the scheme if your property was issued a certificate of occupancy after 25 March 2010 (Areas 3B, 7, 12, 15A, 16, 18) or after 25 October 2011 (area 8), or if your property is rated as a commercial property.

I am a resident of a new student housing facility. Do I have access to an on street parking permit?

No. Residents of purpose built student accommodation (except for Whitley College and International House in Parkville) are not eligible for parking permits under this scheme. For more information on property rating, contact Rates and Valuations on (03) 9658 9658.

I own a property within the City of Melbourne municipality, but reside outside of the municipality. Can I still apply for a parking permit?

No. Property owners who do not reside at the property are not eligible for a parking permit.

I regularly receive in-home care from a carer. Can they get a parking permit?

No. If you require parking for a carer then you must select as one of your permit options the transferable parking permit. This can then be used by your carer, whilst they are at your property.

I require a nanny. Can they get a parking permit?

No. If you require parking for a nanny then you must select as one of your permit options the transferable parking permit. This can then be used by your nanny, whilst they are at your property.

Why am I required to supply supporting evidence with my permit application?

The number of drivers wishing to park locally is greater than the number of available parking spaces. It is important that residents have first priority to parking spaces close to home. The scheme's proof of residency requirements ensures that permits are issued only to those who live in the area.

I rent my house. What proof of residency do I need to supply with my permit application?

A copy of a current utility bill (or similar) in the applicant’s name indicating the service address.

A copy of a current utility bill (or similar) in the applicant’s name indicating the service address.

I have just recently moved into my property and have not yet received a utility bill, what other proof of residency documentation can I supply with my permit application?

If you are unable to supply a utility bill as proof of residency we will also accept one of the following documents:

  • Welcome letter from your utility company (for new residents only)
  • A copy of a current lease/tenancy agreement
  • A copy of a current rent receipt
  • Letter of tenancy from your landlord.

When submitting a utility bill as supporting evidence, how current should my bill be?

Your utility bill must be the most recent or no more than three months old.

What utility bill can I use as supporting evidence?

We will accept the following utility bills as supporting evidence: a current electricity account, gas account, land line telephone account or water account.

Bills for insurance, RACV membership, bank statements, broadband, and mobile phone accounts are not accepted as supporting evidence. All utility bills must be in the applicant’s name and list the service address.

The utility bills and vehicle registration are all in my partner’s name. Can I still submit the application form in my name?

Yes, however you must submit proof of residency and proof of vehicle ownership in your partner's name accompanied by a Statutory Declaration from your partner advising you are a resident at that address.

Do I need to submit the required documentation or can these documents be sighted instead?

If you have concerns about providing copies of the required documentation, you may apply for the permit in person at Melbourne Town Hall Administration building, 120 Swanston Street, Melbourne, CBD, where the required documentation can be sighted by officers.
