Little Lonsdale Street streetscape upgrade

We’re making it safer for people to move around Little Lonsdale Street with new pedestrian and road safety upgrades between Queen and Swanston streets.

The Little Lonsdale Street streetscape upgrade will be delivered in two stages. The first stage will focus on widening footpaths and planting trees and the second stage will deliver new, raised pedestrian crossings, speed humps and safety aids. Works will be completed in sections between Queen Street to Elizabeth Street and Elizabeth Street to Swanston Street.

Upcoming works

Stage 2

Stage 2 works are projected to start in January 2024 on the first section between Elizabeth and Swanston Streets. Once complete, works along the next section between Queen and Elizabeth streets will start.

In Stage 2 streetscape works, we will:

  • Install raised bluestone pedestrian crossings
  • Install two raised bluestone flat top speed humps
  • Establish two raised intersections in bluestone
  • Install flat bluestone and granite safety strips
  • General renewal works, including upgrading kerbing.

Section 1 - Elizabeth Street to Swanston Street

Works are anticipated to start on Monday 8 January 2024 and take approximately 4 weeks to complete. Work hours will be between 7am and 6pm, Monday to Friday.

Due to the nature of the works, Little Lonsdale Street will be closed to through traffic between Elizabeth and Swanston Streets 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for the duration of construction.

Local traffic, delivery drivers and residents will still be able to access the area with traffic management in place 24/7 to help get people where they need to go.

Closing the road area will help Citywide work quickly, reducing long-term disruption to residents, traders and people moving along the street. For your safety, please observe any signs and instructions in place during this project.

Thank you for your cooperation while we deliver these important safety upgrades.
