Our approach to data

At the City of Melbourne, we work continually to better understand Melbourne, its communities, its economy and its place in an evolving world. We aim to make a positive difference for our community and those who experience our city through using emerging technologies and actionable insights to support stakeholders, enabling better policy, planning and operational decisions. By empowering the organisation and community to leverage data and insights we can understand where we’ve come from, where we are now and how best to shape Melbourne’s future.

Our priorities

We are guided by the following principles:

1. Improving access to our data

Democratising data through our commitment to Open DataOpens in new tab, fostering transparency and accountability while supporting timely and evidence-based decisions.

2. Ensuring our data is fit for purpose and secure

Building trust by managing our data in line with best practice, government policies and security standards.

3. Leading urban data innovation

Testing and trialling emerging technology and design to solve city problems to support a more inclusive, resilient and sustainable future.

4. Growing engagement through being inclusive, collaborative and open

Sharing knowledge with our communities to grow engagement and encourage partnerships to boost efficiency for the benefit of all Melbournians.

5. Providing data solutions that benefit many

Focusing on solutions that deliver outcomes and simplify effort.
