2021 Urban Design Award

The Vision 2020 Redevelopment by Architectus and Schmidt Hammer Lassen has ensured that State Library Victoria will remain the epicentre for education, ideas, creativity and debate in the City of Melbourne for many years to come.

Grand interior in State Library Victoria.

As Australia’s oldest and busiest public library, State Library Victoria attracts curious minds and serious researchers alike.

Enlivening the library’s buildings and surrounding environment, the refurbishment has provided more diverse facilities for users and opportunities for tenants, creative practitioners and entrepreneurs.

The transformation has increased public space and seating to create a space where everyone feels welcome and where memorable and meaningful connections between the collection, individuals and the community are fostered.

We acknowledge and honour the unbroken spiritual, cultural and political connection they have maintained to this unique place for more than 2000 generations.

We accept the invitation in the Uluru Statement from the Heart and are committed to walking together to build a better future.
