                    Public liability insurance

Public liability insurance may protect you, or your organisation, if you have to pay compensation or costs where a claim is made against you or your organisation for causing personal injury or property damage through your negligence.

If you’re applying for a permit to conduct an activity in municipal public space (such as works in the road, street trading or an event), you must have public liability insurance.

You'll be issued with a certificate of currency from your insurer and we’ll ask for a copy of this when you apply for a permit.

                    When do you need it?

We’ll let you know when you apply for a permit whether you need to supply us with a certificate of currency.

Some permits and activities that require a certificate include:

                    • consent for works (road works)
                    • temporary protective structures
                    • real estate agent pointer boards
                    • fundraising.

Requirements of a certificate of currency

Your certificate of currency must be kept current for the life of the permit.

Your public liability insurance must also meet all the following requirements:

                    • The cover is for a value of at least $20 million for a single claim.
                    • The person (or company) applying for the permit is named on the certificate as being insured by the policy.
                    • The insurance is for public and products liability, or general liability.
                    • Professional indemnity insurance may be required for certain permits such as planning or advice-based permits.
                    • The insurance class is relevant to the activities being undertaken.
                    • City of Melbourne is named as an interested party for their respective rights and interests under the policy.
                    • The insurer is on the APRA register of authorised insurers, or approved alternative provider.
                    • The insurer is based in Australia. If not, they have a local claim management agent that is bound by Australian law.
                    • The certificate of currency is signed or has the name and contact details of the insurer.

If your certificate doesn't meet the above requirements, your permit may not be issued or renewed.

To keep your certificate up to date, upload a new certificate of currency to your application.
