The first step to hosting a sustainable event is to pick the right venue. Here are some questions you can ask venue managers to help inform your choice. The more questions answered with a yes – the more sustainable your venue!

Event venue checklist
Energy
- Does the venue have
energy efficient lighting, equipment and ventilation? For example, LED lights and well maintained ventilation systems for optimum performance.
- Is the venue powered by
renewable energy?
Water
- Is there a drinking water tap for people to fill their own bottles?
- Does the venue have dual flush toilets and use
water efficient appliances?
- Does the venue have a rainwater tank?
Purchasing habits
- Does the venue provide vegetarian, local and seasonal catering options?
- Does the venue try to minimise single use plastic items, such as straws, balloons, bottled water, take away coffee cups and plastic bags?
- Does the venue try to source more sustainable supplies in general, such as Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) paper products, fair trade, carbon neutral, environmentally friendly alternatives (such as for cleaning products)?
Waste and resource recovery
- Does the venue have recycling facilities?
- Does the venue promote the use of reusable cutlery, plates, bowls and cups?
- Does the venue try to reduce its paper printing (such as marketing materials) and single use decorative items?
- Does the venue use upcycled or recycled products and materials?
- Does the venue have an organic waste facility, donate food that isn’t eaten, or recycle its food waste?
Transport
- Is the venue easily accessible by public transport (within 300 metres)?
- Does the venue have bicycle parking facilities?
Measurement and reporting
- Can the venue support you to collect environmental performance data?
- Is the venue carbon neutral?
