Whether you need a permit or not, it’s your responsibility to ensure temporary structures are safe.

You need a permit for the following temporary structures:
If your temporary structure is smaller than those listed, you don’t need a permit.
You don’t need a permit for inflatable structures of less than 100 m2.
You should apply at least 15 working days before erecting any temporary structure.

You will need to attach supporting documents. This includes a copy of a current occupancy permit issued by the Victorian Building Authority.
You must attach to your application three sets of scaled site plans for the proposed marquee, stage or seating plans.
Plans must show temporary structures in relation to other buildings and features such as sanitary facilities. This includes facilities for people with disabilities.

You must pay a fee of $543.80 per structure.
You must pay this fee at least two weeks before your event. If you pay late, there is a late fee of $272.
Your application includes two one-hour inspections during business hours. This is sufficient for most applications.
If your application needs additional inspections during business hours, you must pay $157.80 per hour.
After hours or weekend inspections will be charged at $315.90 per hour. Please confirm prior to booking.
You must get all approvals before you erect a structure or occupy the site.
If you don’t do this, you could face fines, the removal of your structure and other penalties.
