Melbourne creatives entice visitors to city precincts

Media release, Wednesday 16 February 2022
Bad-mannered wait staff will serve up burgers at a pop-up diner in Carlton, thanks to a City of Melbourne initiative to revitalise vacant shopfronts.

More than 20 shopfronts have now been transformed through the shopfront activation program - a joint initiative by the City of Melbourne and the Victorian Government to bring the buzz to Melbourne’s streets and laneways.

Karen’s Diner will open its doors next month at 398-400 Lygon Street, offering a quirky, interactive dining experience in a previously vacant space.

Other recent additions to the program include:

                    • Podcast Now at the Victoria Hotel in the CBD, where hotel guests and city visitors can create their own podcasts
                    • Lastly in Howey Place, which sells Japanese streetwear and Avant Garde designs
                    • Mr Cuff, also in Howey Place, a tailor crafting handmade suits with a focus on local and ethical materials
                    • ELK, an ethical label that produces clothing, accessories, leather goods, and footwear.

Sustainable retailers La Guapa and WØRKS will also open their doors in Docklands in the coming weeks, providing the precinct with a much-needed boost.

The $2.6 million shopfront activation program is part of the $100 million Melbourne City Recovery Fund.

These 20 shopfronts join almost 80 more that have been brought to life through a range of initiatives delivered by the City of Melbourne and the Victorian Government. Other initiatives include the Flash Forward Store featuring merchandise and artworks from Melbourne creatives, a series of themed pop-up libraries, the installation of 45 large vinyl decals showcasing the work of local artists, and the temporary Uptown art exhibition in early 2021.

Attributable to Lord Mayor Sally Capp

'We’ve received 460 expressions of interest from prospective tenants to be involved in our Shopfront Activation Program, including artists, creatives, start-ups and independent retailers.

“There’s no sign of interest slowing down – we expect to connect dozens more unique businesses with innovative landlords in the coming months.

“There’s always room for more fun and laughter filling our streets, and we’re thrilled to welcome Karen’s Diner to the city, with comedy season just around the corner.

“I can’t wait to visit the latest round of shopfronts beautifully designed by talented creatives. Through this program we’re catering for all tastes and giving everyone an incentive to spend time in the city.”

Attributable to Business and Global Opportunities portfolio lead, Councillor Kevin Louey

“Around one in five shops across the municipality are currently vacant, so we’re implementing quick and flexible methods to boost activity in our precincts with the aim of promoting long-term leases.

“We’re giving artisans and entrepreneurs the opportunity to thrive in Australia’s most creative city – I encourage all Melburnians to visit the CBD, Lygon Street and Docklands for a really unique experience.”
