String Bean Alley

String Bean Alley
Through the renewal program we’ve installed 12 retail containers in String Bean Alley, completing the strip to create Melbourne’s newest laneway experience.

Open for business

Twenty-six independent traders in bespoke shipping containers now call String Bean Alley home and provide a uniquely Melbourne shopping experience in the heart of the market.

Twelve businesses have joined existing traders to offer a variety of locally designed, sourced or produced fashion, vintage, jewellery, art, craft, skincare, toys, books and more.

String Bean Alley and the pedestrian plaza on Queen Street are part of a series of key market improvements as identified in the Renewal Master Plan.

String Bean Alley is open Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays and on Wednesday evenings during The Night Market event series. For more details, visit Queen Victoria Market.

Project overview

In late 2018, Heritage Victoria granted a permit to temporarily install 12 new containers in String Bean Alley, completing the laneway and creating a two-sided retail strip. Installed in May 2019, the containers add more retail space, provide weather protection and storage for traders.
