                    Lincoln Square

Municipal square with trees, seats and paved area
Lincoln Square is a significant local open space in Carlton, in the heart of Melbourne’s Innovation District, valued by residents, local workers, students and visitors for its mature trees, sunny lawns and gathering spaces.

City of Melbourne has developed a concept plan for the entire park, to ensure that Lincoln Square meets future needs and community expectations.

Endorsed by the Future Melbourne Committee in April 2018, the concept plan sets the direction for improvement works over the next five years and outlines four key actions: expanded park, new play space, planning for trees and improved park amenity.

                      Summary

The Lincoln Square Concept Plan includes four key actions: expanded park, new play space, planning for trees, and improved park amenity. See the interactive plan for more details.

                      Park expansion

Implementation of the concept plan commenced in 2019 with the expansion of the park. A significant area of roadway was converted into public open space, with new land and garden beds installed, along with new trees, improved footpaths, bike lanes and lighting.

                      New play space

Home to the first public playground in Victoria from circa 1907, play continues to be an important part of Lincoln Square.

Works to upgrade the playground commenced in November 2020 and the park was open to the public in September 2021. The new play space is designed for children of all ages around the 150-year-old Moreton Bay Figs at the site and features:

                      • rope bridges, play towers, swings and slides
                      • timber play structures and features utilising salvaged City of Melbourne trees
                      • standing chimes and speaker tubes
                      • bird baths and habitat boxes
                      • elevated decking beneath the trees
                      • a new BBQ and picnic area
                      • extensive planting
                      • clatter bridge
                      • decking
                      • new feature lighting beneath the deck
                      • irrigation.

                      Construction updates

Keep up to date on the project as it progresses.
