                    Elizabeth Street south streetscape improvements

The City of Melbourne has completed streetscape improvement works on the southern end of Elizabeth Street between Flinders Street and Flinders Lane. The project commenced in February 2021 and was completed in mid-August 2021.

The corner of Elizabeth Street and Flinders Street is one of the busiest pedestrian intersections in the city with more than 9000 people crossing the intersection during the morning peak prior to the impacts of COVID-19.

As we welcome people back into the city, the  upgraded streetscape will improve access for pedestrians and public transport users. Key changes made include the removal of the southbound traffic lane to make way for a new pedestrianised public space, an expanded footpath, upgrades to street furniture, new bluestone paving and landscaping. A new protective slab was also installed over the 120-year-old red brick drain beneath Elizabeth Street.

                    Construction updates

These construction updates were distributed while the project was underway.
