                    New Ideas Lab current projects

ArtPlay is supporting the development of four new projects through the ArtPlay New Ideas Lab 2019-20.

The upcoming projects include a theatrical performance featuring child-led escape rooms, a workshop series and visual art exhibition using emerging sustainable technologies such as 3D printing to explore children’s consumer choices, an immersive performance for babies and their carers inspired by the Korean colour spectrum of Obang and a GPS triggered audio experience constructed using the unique language of toddlers.

ArtPlay's New Ideas Lab is an annual EOI process that gives artists an opportunity to propose projects for our creative arts program for children and their families.

These projects are integrated into our program – look out for them in What’s On at ArtPlay or our E-News.

                    Imagination Gamespaces

Artists: Brendan Ternus, Alia Syed Rose and Shaun Wykes

In Imagination Gamespaces children will create interactive story-based ‘escape rooms’, drawing on the disciplines of game design, creative writing, visual art and performance.

Participants in each of our immersive workshops will be tasked with dreaming up new worlds, developing characters and stories, devising mysterious clues and tricky riddles, or designing fantastical costumes and sets. The resulting 'Gamespaces' will feature living characters brought to life in performance by the young creators, who will introduce the work and guide audience members from clue to clue.

                    The Future of Toys

Artists: Ben Paul and Jake Nakashima-Edwards

This project will engage children in questioning consumer choices associated with toys, plastic and play. Each child is invited to bring along an old, much-loved toy. Together they will share stories of these toys before pulling them apart into raw materials.

Guided by conversations about the future and what we’d like it to be, children will design a toy to accompany them into their future. Working with industrial designer Ben Paul and fashion designer Jake Nakashima-Edwards, the children will realise their creations using emerging sustainable technologies of 3D scanning, printing, plastic recycling and textile re-use.

A final exhibition will feature each child’s future toy and the stories of why they made them for the future.

                    Obang

Artists: Youbi Lee and Yee Wen Soo

This project is an interactive performance for babies and their care givers, inspired by the traditional Korean colour spectrum of Obang.

Drawing from this philosophy the project will explore five primary colours with five spaces in the home that are symbolically connected with a babies needs.

                    Listening To Here

Artists: Jessica Wilson and Marco Cher-Gibard

In Listening to Here the artists will collaborate with children 1-3 years of age and their parents to create a GPS triggered audio experience, constructed using the unique language of toddlers as they respond to outdoor places.

Once made, other children of the same age can explore a world mediated by voices of their peers, either alone or shared via dual headphones with a parent.
