                    2021: Round 1

Golden numbers against a starry background.
Juliet Miranda Rowe is a cross-disciplinary artist with a history of exhibiting soft sculptural and illustrative works.

Juliet has exhibited at Bus Projects, West Space, Incinerator Gallery and NGV International.

In 2016 Juliet’s practice pivoted towards the moving image, predominantly working with 2D animation and motion collage.

Having carved a niche in documentary, film and television around Feminist and LGBTQIA histories, she balances time between commercial and personal projects.

                    91 - 21

A CBD resident, Juliet’s locked-down 2020 was spent on isolated walks through the deserted corridors of Melbourne Central where she re-acquainted herself with the Marionette Pocket Watch.

In the empty shopping centre its hourly chime of Waltzing Matilda was impossible to ignore. ‘How long has this clock been here? Why is this clock here? Who put it here? Why don’t I know anything about it? Why have I never thought about it before?’

Upon reflection and celebration of the 30th Anniversary of Melbourne Central’s Iconic Marionette Pocket Watch 91 - 21 is a curated, site-responsive, animation program.

Presented publicly and online as a free multi-channel, video installation, screening throughout September 2021.

Positioned below the watch, 91 - 21 screens in conversation with the hourly Marionette reveal.

The exhibiting structure is designed in response to the watch’s uniquely kitsch, magical and mechanical physicality. Its octagonal frame allows viewers to glimpse both simultaneously.

As the watch encourages visitors to pause and acknowledge the passing of each hour. 91 - 21 invites a collection of multi-disciplinary creatives, to reflect and acknowledge the passing of 30 years. In the city, country and world. Challenging them to design a Marionette in their interpretation of 21st century Australiana.

This display of a playful on-screen mixed-media animation showcases the diversity of contemporary Australia.
