                    2021: Round 1

Art installation in front of State Library building

Mockup of the artwork installed at the State Library of Victoria

                    J. Rosenbaum is a Melbourne AI artist and researcher working with 3D modelling, artificial intelligence and extended reality technologies.

J's work explores post-human and post-gender concepts using classical art combined with new media techniques and programming.

J is a PhD candidate at RMIT University in Melbourne at the School of Art exploring Computer Perceptions of Gender and the nature of Artificial Intelligence (AI) generated art and the human hands behind the processes that engender bias, especially towards gender minorities. Their artwork highlights this bias through programmatic interactive artworks and traditional gallery displays.

They speak at conferences worldwide about the use of artificial intelligence in art and have exhibited all over the world.

J’s artwork has been supported by the City of Melbourne Covid-19 Arts Grants and has won the Midsumma Australia Post Art Prize.

                    Evolving Faces of Melbourne

Evolving Faces of Melbourne is a public AI project exploring the collections of Melbourne institutions and the concept of shifting the AI away from the images of the past, towards a representation of today.

Viewers will see cube shaped LED displays mounted on stone plinths in key cultural institutions across Melbourne. They will watch AI generated animations rippling across the surface of the displays, at first showing videos based on the content of the site or institution. Viewers can participate by submitting their selfies via a website using a QR code. This will contribute to new AI training and slowly change the narrative of the work to reflect the current faces of Melbourne.

This work would remain in place physically for three months with the animations to be updated every two weeks to reflect the changes in the submitted content. At the beginning of the project the works will be all based entirely on the location. As the time progresses less of the AI based institutional work will be shown and more of the selfie inspired content until only AI generated selfies remain.
