                    Hardware Lane streetscape upgrade

One of Melbourne’s most iconic laneways is set for an upgrade.

Hardware Lane is a vibrant laneway known for its popular restaurants, bars and shops. To keep it thriving and drawing in even more visitors, we're refreshing the streetscape with a new bluestone surface, leafy jacaranda trees and safety barriers.

The upgrade will ensure that the laneway is compliant with the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA), and keep it safe and accessible for the community and visitors.

                    Stage two

Stage two of the project will focus on upgrading Hardware Lane between Litte Bourke Street and Lonsdale Street.

Works are expected to start in early May 2024 and be complete by October 2024.

The scope of the works includes:

                    • replacing the existing surface with bluestone pavers
                    • installing tactile surface indicators, line markings and bollards
                    • planting one new tree and installing a tree guard.

                    Stage one

Works on stage one of the project (from Bourke Street to Little Bourke Street) started in May 2023 and were completed in November 2023.

This stage of the project delivered a new bluestone surface, new jacaranda trees, and an improved irrigation system, as well as surface indicators, line markings and vehicle barriers.
