Statement on incident at Princes Park

Media release, Monday 12 August 2019
The following statement can be attributed to the City of Melbourne Chief Executive Officer Justin Hanney:

“The City of Melbourne is working closely with authorities to assist in investigating the fatal incident that occurred at Princes Park this morning.

"Our arborists are on-site and all trees in the immediate vicinity will be re-assessed for safety as a matter of priority.

"The fallen tree is an English Elm that was planted in 1913. It is one of 3000 Elms and one of 77,000 trees on our tree register.  All our trees are inspected at least every two years and we are currently ascertaining when this tree was last inspected.

"Most importantly, our thoughts are with the deceased and their family and friends at this time."
