New concepts reveal Kensington centre vision

Media release, Thursday 5 September 2019
The City of Melbourne has released concepts for a new Kensington Community Recreation Centre based on a shared vision for an expanded, greener centre that better meets community needs.

Chair of the People City portfolio, Councillor Beverley Pinder, invited community members to have their say on the concepts which include more flexible spaces, additional multi-purpose courts, a new pool and water play area, and sustainable design.

"We're delighted to share concepts for the new two-level Kensington Community Recreation Centre, which include a number of improvements for this much-loved centre that has served the Kensington community since 1976," Cr Pinder said.

"These concepts showcase the community's ideas and vision for a state-of-the-art centre that remains affordable, accessible and relevant to our community."

Cr Pinder said the proposed redevelopment would improve access for many in the community and help deliver on the City's commitment to tackling climate change and reducing emissions.

"New, modern, accessible and family-friendly change facilities in the pool and water play area will make it more comfortable for everyone to use the centre.

"Other features include a larger gym, a café, and better integration with JJ Holland Park.

"The concepts also include sustainability features such as solar panels, a new green wall, water conservation measures, efficient heating and cooling systems, and double glazing.

"The new designs reflected input from across the community with feedback on the redevelopment from more than 400 people through emails, face-to-face sessions and our website.

"This is an important centre for many people in our community, and I want to thank everyone who has shared their ideas. We've listened to your input and included many of your ideas in these concepts.

"I strongly encourage everyone who uses the centre and neighbouring residents to view the concepts and tell us what you think."

Planning and design works for the new centre have been funded with $1.2 million included in the Annual Plan and Budget 2019–20.

Subject to Council's budget cycles, construction is expected to begin in February 2021. Find out more at participate.melbourne.vic.gov.au/kensington-recreation-centre

Feedback closes on 4 October 2019.
