Australia’s first online global career fair: Melbourne Global Careers, a joint initiative of the City of Melbourne, Victorian Government and eight universities, is underway this week.

Australia’s first online global career fair: Melbourne Global Careers, a joint initiative of the City of Melbourne, Victorian Government and eight universities, is underway this week.

Lord Mayor Robert Doyle said Melbourne Global Careers will simulate a physical exhibition and will feature exhibitor halls, a helpdesk, a networking lounge as well as live chat and webinars between employers, students and graduates.

"I am proud that Melbourne is leading the country with this collaborative project," the Lord Mayor said.

"We want to provide new and innovative opportunities for students to excel in their chosen career and link up with employers from all over the world.

"The online global career fair will help our local and international students and graduates to understand labour market trends, the skills and qualifications they need and how they can access career pathways in Australia and overseas."

More than 80 employers are participating in the fair, including individual exhibitor halls with employers from China, Malaysia and India.

The fair will run until 10 September and will remain open for further written student enquiries until 20 September.

Participants include multinational companies, small and medium enterprises, government and non-government departments, research and development organisations and bi-lateral chambers of commerce.

Student registration for Melbourne Global Careers is free, and open to current students, recent graduates and qualified prospective students from the University of Melbourne, Monash University, RMIT University, Swinburne University, Deakin University, La Trobe University, Victoria University and CQ University.

Global Education Solutions consultants are delivering the fair through an online platform developed by 6Connex with capacity for up to 100,000 international students to engage with universities and employers.

The City of Melbourne has contributed $10,000 to the career fair and the City of Melbourne’s Tianjin office has been instrumental in securing the Chinese employers and agencies to participate.

Councillor Jackie Watts, Chair of the City of Melbourne’s Knowledge City portfolio, said the fair will be accessed by globally diverse university students and graduates.

"There are more than 30,000 international students in the City of Melbourne. Obviously engaging with the wider community through employment will enhance their experience of Melbourne. We want our international students to develop through the knowledge they acquire formally through study or research, as well as through opportunities to access fulfilling work," Cr Watts said.
